While Roy is really funny and has interesting opinons about society, the class itself is a little dry. I fell asleep in lectures, when I went, and think that this class would have been more enjoyable if I liked Fantasy novels. Your grade is three essays, which basically repeat the lectures so the material itself is easy. Only take it if you're interested in the topic though.
The class is pretty much reading 3 or 4 science fiction books, and writing a paper for each book. Wagner pretty much just talks about whatever he wants thhe whole class and kind of talks about the book. I suppose it would be a fairly easy class if you read all of the books, but if not it's pretty tough. So pretty much you should read the books if you want to do good.
This class was terrible. It was not easy, because the books you're supposed to read are absolute wastes of time. I would not take it again under any circumstances. You read books that make no sense and then write in response to prompts that make even less sense. Before you take this as an 'easy A', realize that it is not what you expect because it is unlike any other class.
Roy is brilliant, but he's definitely out there. His lectures usually consist of him recounting his time in Papua New Guinea, and assorted other tangents that may or may not have to do with the books being read. He tends to emphasize certain ideas that he wants expressed in your papers (which have very bizarre and specific topics) in lecture, so pay attention when he addresses them. It's a fairly simple course, you just have to stick with it.
