Course had 3 non-cumulative exams (no final) and 2 papers. Exams were short, multiple choice, and fairly straight-forward. Papers were short but graded very harshly. If you did the readings and took the papers seriously, getting an A was pretty doable, and doing the readings wasn't too bad given that the content was, for the most part, interesting and relatable. Wilson is a good lecturer and engages the class, usually incorporating interactive examples so as to keep everyone interested. Overall, was a good, easy class.
This was my favorite class I have taken at UVA. The material is really interesting and applicable to life and Wilson does a great job breaking up lectures with videos and demonstrations. He also lets class out early really frequently. The grade comes from 3 tests (a lot of questions are on the online practice reading quizzes), two papers, one of which involves a partner, and clicker questions. He does one clicker question a class, but you only need to get 12 right throughout the semester to get full credit and after that it is extra credit.
Professor Wilson makes this course as fantastic as it can possibly be. He is enthusiastic, interesting and breaks down material into pieces so that it is comprehensible to students. However, this class is not "easy;" in fact, I would say it's around medium difficulty. You should always come to lecture (it's interesting anyway) and always read the textbook by the assigned dates as he uses clicker Qs as a form of participation record. 8.5/10 would recommend. This was my first ever PSYC class.
Really loved this class. It is my first and only psych class I've ever taken. Previous reviewers said the paper grading was harsh, but honestly if you just followed the syllabus and the rubric you should do fine! The tests were not too difficult. I studied a night or two before for a few hours and got As. I honestly got a lot more out of this class when I did the readings before, so I would recommend doing that. I've learned a lot of applicable thing about psychology. Would highly recommend this class!!!
I can't imagine reading the reviews for this course and not be thinking it's the best thing at UVa. However, I am a fourth year psych major, about to graduate, have literally taken social psych abroad and it didn't transfer so I took this again to finish my last 4 credits thinking it would be a walk in the park. The TA grading for this class ruined the entire course for me. There is no rubric, some grade easily (lucky me, didn't get them) and some grade SO UNREASONABLY.
I'm great with psychology tests, it's why I decided to major in it. So while there are often confusing and complicated questions, I made my way to all As on the tests studying the night before every time. Went to class only to get clicker points, but the material was funny/interesting so it wasn't miserable. But I didn't pay much attention. Regardless of this, I am going to get my first ever B in a psych course because of the TA paper grading. You'd think I'd have a grasp on these elementary psych topics by now, but apparently not, as I got Bs and Cs on the paper. Just know that your grade in this class is pretty much fully dependent on the luck of the TA draw.
Even that aside, it's a fun class. You will learn things that will make you a better, smarter person. But it's not as easy as you think should your TA screw you over :) peace out UVa.
Professor Wilson is one of my favorite professors I have ever taken at UVa. He is really knowledgeable and seems to really enjoy teaching this class. The lectures are very interesting so its pretty easy to stay focused. The tests are pretty straightforward as well. That being said, the one downfall of this course is the papers. They are graded VERY harshly and I got points taken off for silly things such as improper citations or not explaining an experiment correctly when the implications seemed obvious. They are only two pages but you are going to wish they were more, as it is hard to show that you know the material within that limit. I did well on all three tests but the papers are what hurt my grade in this class. Professor Wilson himself is great but the TAs who grade the papers are such hardasses who care about every little detail. If you do well on the papers then it is easy to get an A in this class but if not then your grade will fall somewhere in the B range.
Although Professor Wilson is a great lecturer and the class itself is very interesting, the TA's take away from this class. Your grade is entirely dependent on your TA and how harshly they choose to grade your papers. Furthermore, since the class is so large students are repeatedly recommended not to email TA's or Professor Wilson and told that they cannot answer questions about the paper. Unfortunately I had the strictest TA and was given comments irrelevant to the rubric such as "your conclusion was not deep enough and should have provided more insightful material" on papers that are capped at a 2 page limit. However I did enjoy the class and if you're interested in Psych go for it! Just don't read too much into the grade distribution.
Loved this class! I thought it was fun, interesting, and very applicable to everyday life (covers topics such as aggression, interpersonal attraction, relationships, prejudice, conformity, and more). It makes you consider things you've never considered before and definitely opens up new ways of thinking and looking at the world around you. I am a psych major, but I have friends who took the class as non-psych majors and enjoyed the class as well. Because it is all about the social world, it seems to be a little more common sense than other sects of psychology. That being said, I wouldn't necessarily call this an easy class. It's not difficult, but you definitely have to understand the major topics in the textbook/lecture and be able to apply that understanding on the exam multiple choice questions. They can be a bit tricky, but if you pay attention, read, and study some, you should be able to do just fine! I read all the assigned chapters in the textbook, went to almost all the lectures (there are clicker questions plus they're just interesting), and studied a couple nights in advance of the tests, and I ended up with an A in the class. Professor Wilson is awesome; he's engaging, excited about psychology, and uses lots of different things in class to teach: videos, songs, PowerPoint slides, graphs, etc. This is probably one of my favorite classes I've taken thus far at UVa. Definitely recommend.
This is a very interesting class that is engaging and enlightening. If you are interested and passionate about psychology I would recommend taking this course. Also a prerequisite for Batten. However, if neither of these apply to you I do not recommend taking this course as it can be very difficult.
This is by far one of the most interesting classes I've taken at UVA-- It's crazy how relevant all of the information is to real life situations. Professor Wilson is a fantastic lecturer, he uses plenty of videos and other media to keep people engaged and always weaves life lessons into content. This class isn't the easiest, though. The tests can be pretty nitpicky with textbook information, so close reading is definitely necessary to get some of the more obscure questions right. The TA grading is very volatile and arbitrary--I got an A on the first paper and a B on the second when i thought my second paper was far and away better, so it's pretty much luck of the draw. However, Professor Wilson himself is a very fair and accommodating professor--he gave us a point for signing the honor pledge on the second exam because he thought it was hard. Overall, don't take this class as an easy A, but take it as a really rewarding, fun and applicable class that you'll always want to attend.
