At first you'll think he's an awkward guy who sounds kind of like Kermit the Frog, but it's all part of the charm. Timothy Wilson is an amazing professor. But don't be fooled, THIS IS NOT AN "EASY A" CLASS!! The papers are graded rather harshly, and the tests are ridiculously tricky. However, if you put in a little effort to read the chapters and study at least a day before the test, you can easily get at least a B+.
Grades and work aside, this class is one of the few where you will actually learn things that will help you long after you graduate from UVA. I highly recommend it to anyone!
TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CAN GET OFF THE WAITING LIST. Seriously. I've wanted to take it since Orientation and I finally got in, and I don't regret it at all! Professor Wilson is seriously the best: I mean, he helped write the book. Don't think that he's full of himself though, he polled the students who bought the book new and asked which charity they wanted his royalties from the sales to go towards. So basically: there's 3 unit tests (40 ?'s each), 2 two-page papers, and clicker questions which can only boost your grade up to the next step (A minus to A, etc). The clicker questions were sometimes common sense but were mostly little details from the reading, so if you keep up with that, you will almost always get the clicker questions right and that will boost your grade at the end. The tests were not tricky at all, unless you didn't go to lectures and crammed the readings into the night before the test. He also posts the lecture power points online which is nice because he sometimes goes through them really quickly in lecture. We always watch at least one funny / interesting video in lecture and that makes it something to look forward to, not to dread like some classes. I have taken a few Psych classes before, but the concepts are honestly not difficult at all as long as you try at least a little bit. I'm no genius but ended up with an A in the class.
Wilson is a good lecturer for a large psych class. He is clear, and he was one of the writers for the textbook so his lectures and textbook go well together. Grade is 3 equally-weighted tests (no cumulative final) and two 2 page papers. You can pass the class without going to lectures, but you have to go if you want an A, as some of the lecture material isn't in the book and isn't laid out explicitly in the slides.
Fun professor, interesting material, but also very hyped because the lecture is comparably much more interesting than a lot of available courses. That being said, read the book, be sure to understand the concepts and theories, and put in time for the papers because they can definitely boost or hurt your grade. Clicker questions also helped to boost my grade up by a step, so reading would definitely help in the long run.
Interesting material and well written book, but professor can be boring at times. Not as easy as the grade distribution makes it seem. Overall grade consists of two 30 point papers and three 40 point tests. Fairly easy to do well on the test, but need to attend lectures if you want perfect score, because some questions come directly from the lectures. Papers are bull shit. They seem to be arbitrarily graded and it seems that most people end up with a B on the paper for no apparent reason. To get clicker questions correct, you must come to the lecture having read the book. Overall, interesting subject but pretty poor course.
One of my favorite classes at UVa so far. Not only is the material interesting and relevant to social situations we encounter everyday, but Wilson is a great professor. He shows movie clips and uses interesting examples to make the class interactive.
To do well on exams, you will need to attend lecture AND study the textbook as there is often material on exams that is covered solely in the textbook. As long as you read/review the textbook and vocab, review powerpoints, & attend lecture, you'll do well in the course! The material is easy to read about because you study what makes people attracted to each other, prejudice/sterotypes, and other cool topics. This is the first PSYC class I've taken at UVa (took AP Psych in highschool) and I was happy with my grade. Highly recommend this class to people of all majors!
Easily one of the best classes I've taken so far at U.Va. Wilson was not only smart, kind, and down-to-Earth, he also created a very fun and informative lecture environment, using great video clips, songs, and real life examples to demonstrate social psych principles. He was funny, and he also made sure to answer any questions in the lecture, which were rare since he explained concepts very clearly.
The class was relatively easy. Three tests, each weighted equally, and all one had to do to do well was read the book, attend lecture, and study notes from each for a little bit prior to the test. The papers were easy, although the grading could be a little rough, but the clicker questions gave you extra credit points to make up for it.
On a final note, the great part of this class didn't just come from Wilson's awesome teaching, but also from the fact that the material was interesting, easy to learn, and also incredibly poignant to everyday life. Again, a very reasonable, useful, interesting, and fun class packaged into one that I highly recommend.
Professor Wilson is a solid lecturer who keeps things pretty interesting, and the material of this course is really cool. It's a fun subject. Tests always had one or two weird questions, but overall they were pretty fair. The essays, on the other hand, were useless. They were graded very harshly and contributed to the course. It's hard to get an A in this course, but easy to get an A-. I definitely recommend this course to anyone looking for an extra class to take, Wilson is very good and the course material is dope.
