This class was a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. It is fairly interesting though and if you are interested Dobbins is a knowledgeable and able instructor

This class was one of my most difficult. It covers a broad range of topics very quickly so make sure you are keeping up with the pieces of art and understand them. Dobbins is a wonderful professor though and really likes his job. Plus, Renee is an awesome T.A. so if you can, get her for section!
I loved this class! While I enjoyed art before taking this course, Dobbins and Ismini taught me to look at everything with a more critical eye and I also got a better understanding on how art fits into history. A really cool class. As a tip, I found that powerpoint slideshows with images of the art works really helped me study.
ARTH101 definitely covered interesting material, but lectures can get very boring, especially since they are an hour and 15 minutes. Overall, the class is alot of memorization and requires only a significant amount when studying for the quizzes, midterm, and final. You can't wait till the last minute to study because you have to know everything about every work studied in lecture. I probably put in around 30 hours of studying for the final and got an A in the class. I would recommend it only if you're interested in art history, not if you want an easy A.
lots and lots and lots of studying
Memorization is a killer for this course, but very worthwhile.
The class is a LOT of memorization, and the lectures could probably be more interesting. The midterm and final can be really tough since he is sometimes picky about things. But you do learn a lot.
If you are good at memorization, this will be an easy class for you. It's a great class full of interesting information.
Dan Weiss has been my favorite TA so far at UVA. Great guy.
This was one of my favorite classes! Dobbins is a great professor and he's really enthusiastic about art history. His jokes, humor, ancedotes make class so much more interesting! Though this class was enjoyable, there is a lot of work needed to be done. Lots of memorization for the exams, and you need to actively study for them. The identification of slides (3 minutes/slide) were intense. All in all however, this class definetly followed up to Dobbin's "life-long gurantee!" :)
Aside, Scott's a great TA and he really leads discussion well in sections. He even lectured on French Gothic, which was also enjoyable.
