Comprehensive exploration of the multifaceted aspects of data creation, emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between design and data. Students will gain insight into the intentional and unintentional mechanisms that contribute to data creation, including human input, technological processes, environmental factors, and systemic influences.

This class explores the intersection between how we perform elections and how we craft public policy. We investigate two broad questions (1) the effect of policy on elections -- how rules around voting, funding, and the organization of elections influence election outcomes and larger policy discourse, and (2) the effect of elections on policy -- how elections shape elite motivations and citizen expectations around the development and passage of policy.

This two-part program will pair students in Rwanda studying at the University of Global Health Equity with UVA students to investigate global health topics relevant to both countries. In groups of four, students work over the course of the year on a research topic of their choice.  eGlobal provides a faculty-supported platform for UVA students to engage in meaningful long-term engagement with international peers.

This two semester course aims to prepare students for effective and culturally appropriate engagement in Global Health activities by providing a background in Global Health theory, key issues, and culturally appropriate practice. Discussion 1-2 landmark articles and case studies focused on Global Health, using the Partners in Health Engage Curriculum supplemented with other relevant articles authored by global partners and UVA faculty.

Life, including ecosystems, social interactions, and policy interventions are complex, and while some simplification of reality to try to make sense of it all is necessary, simplistic thinking and modeling can lead to market, policy, and other actions doomed to fail. This course dives into the complexity inherent in global systems and uses software tools to build models that help us build understanding and more effective solutions.

Innovation Garage will help students develop skills to build new businesses that leverage technology to scale. Guided by the instructors and guest coaches, students will develop startup ideas by applying well-known frameworks and lessons learned in building new ventures. The course emphasizes the need to understand the pain points experienced by potential customers, as well as determining whether a solution addresses those unmet needs. Prerequisite: EBUS 2830 or ENTP 1010

Reading and research under the direction of a faculty member. Students must obtain approval from a faculty advisor to approve and direct the independent study. Final approval by the Director of Undergraduate Programs is also required.

Writing of a thesis of approximately 50 written pages undertaken in the spring semester of the fourth year by archaeology majors who have been accepted into the Interdisciplinary Archaeology Distinguished Majors Program.Prerequisite: acceptence into DMP program

Provides healthcare domain knowledge, healthcare data understanding, and data science methodologies to solve problems. Understand data types, models, and sources, including electronic health record data; health outcomes, quality, risk, and safety data; and unstructured data, such as clinical text data; biomedical sensor data; and biomedical image data. Querying with SQL, data visualization with Tableau, and analysis and prediction with Python.
