    This class explores the intersection between how we perform elections and how we craft public policy. We investigate two broad questions (1) the effect of policy on elections -- how rules around voting, funding, and the organization of elections influence election outcomes and larger policy discourse, and (2) the effect of elections on policy -- how elections shape elite motivations and citizen expectations around the development and passage of policy.

    eGlobal: Sustainable Engagement in Rwanda

    This two-part program will pair students in Rwanda studying at the University of Global Health Equity with UVA students to investigate global health topics relevant to both countries. In groups of four, students work over the course of the year on a research topic of their choice.  eGlobal provides a faculty-supported platform for UVA students to engage in meaningful long-term engagement with international peers.

    Life, including ecosystems, social interactions, and policy interventions are complex, and while some simplification of reality to try to make sense of it all is necessary, simplistic thinking and modeling can lead to market, policy, and other actions doomed to fail. This course dives into the complexity inherent in global systems and uses software tools to build models that help us build understanding and more effective solutions.

    Innovation Garage will help students develop skills to build new businesses that leverage technology to scale. Guided by the instructors and guest coaches, students will develop startup ideas by applying well-known frameworks and lessons learned in building new ventures. The course emphasizes the need to understand the pain points experienced by potential customers, as well as determining whether a solution addresses those unmet needs. Querying with SQL, data visualization with Tableau, and analysis and prediction with Python.
