Really really interesting course. Some focus on the history of food cultures, some focus on modern food cultures, there's definitely content for anyone remotely interested in food. The professor puts out a loose structure for the day but honestly it's really discussion based and he basically allows the conversation to go wherever you want it to. He's a really chill grader too, I barely lost any points all semester and I am no anthropology major. Just a heads up - it's hard to evaluate the workload if you're not taking it over the summer because of how different the classes are structured so take these with a grain of salt unless you're in summer session.

The first couple weeks in this class sent me home crying. I had never taken an ANTHRO class before so the concepts he was laying on early on in class were completely overwhelming. HOWEVER----- this ended up being my favorite class I have thus taken at UVA. He is a caring man who is vastly intellligent. His materials stretched me to think in ways I never had before. This class changed the way I look at food and food culture- sincerely: I can't recommend him enough. It's tough at first. embrace it, meet with him, and I promise it will be rewarding

Grading policy is completely off. Only gives As to people who get 95s or above...won't round even if you get a 94.9. He's posted responses late and even cancelled an assignment 30 minutes before it was due. Average on an exam was a 78 and then 82 after the curve. Would recommend taking the course with Lisa Shutts instead
