Prof. Dorning is a great teacher, albeit stern and very by the book. He's the prototypical vintage instructor that we have all encountered at some stage in our life. Lectures can be boring and straight from the book, but with differential equations repetition is critical. Homework consumes an inordinate amount of time and will make you wonder why this class is not worth 5 credits. However, doing homework will keep you up to date on the material and reduce the need for studying. Best of all, Dorning's exams are not too challenging.
Dorning's lecture are very dry and he wastes time with overly thorough and unnecessary explanations and talking about lost time. He is frequently late and otherwise unprofessional; on the first day of classes he changed the length of one of the class periods. He is overly concerned with attendance. The homework takes entirely too long, even for a 4 credit class. The quizzes are way too long for the allotted time. But it is not terribly difficult if you are able to keep up with everything.
Dorning's problem sets are very, very, very long. It's a lot of drilling the same problem, so for his weekly quizzes (Thursdays), the homework usually prepares you enough. Gives interesting lectures on applications of material, but the pace varies a lot. It's a little boring at times, but he takes attendance in class, so you have to show up.
DO NOT take diff eq with Dorning. He was one of the worst professors that I've had. He is very old school and set in his ways. His lectures are very dry and he always goes over (even after extending one of the classes by 20 minutes). He assigns a ton of homework every week that takes forever to complete. He takes attendance because his lectures are so awful that no one would come if he didn't. He doesn't teach material on the homework until after the homework is due because he believes that if he actually teaches us what we need to know students won't read the book. Take with anyone else! Good material, awful professor.
