Dorning is a great professor. He uses the chalk board and you'll end up with about a text book worth of notes at the end if you copy everything down. He is very thurough and will know most of the students' names by the end of the course. He holds review sessions and is always willing to go above and beyond for the student.
Prepare to work hard for this class. It feels like it should be a 5 credit course. Without fail, you'll have homework assignments due at the beginning of every week and a quiz at the end of every week, plus 3 midterms and a final. Dorning even recommends reading/studying the material every night (but no one has time for that). He's probably the best 213 teacher, but I would say he's the hardest. He adds on 10 minutes after every class to make up for class periods he'll miss later in the year, but constantly goes over even the extended time period.
In the class itself he goes over more in-depth examples and proofs, but for the quizzes/tests you'll be prepared more if you studied the homework problems.
Dorning is one of the best professors at this University, first of all he is a genius and yet he manages to make differential equations easy to understand for anyone. He goes over a lot of theory in class that won't help you solve the homework or the test problems, but if you came to college to learn this is the class for you. I can honestly say 1 year after his course that there are some differential equations I can't solve but his emphasis on theory has equipped me with the ability to figure out and really understand the problem.
As a teacher he is one of the best and most intriguing and is incredibly helpful. He will go to any length to help you understand the material, go to his office hours and ask him questions, you will come away with a more than satisfactory answer.
Dorning is terrible, he doesn't teach the material in a way that you will understand. He also has a really quiet voice so you can't really hear or make sense of what he is saying. Thirdly he moves very fast. His averages for tests were significantly lower than other sections. I recommend that you take Guadagni or Fulgam.
