Professor China Scherz got me interested in anthropology. She makes the class enjoyable with her enthusiasm and active interaction with students. The subject matter is also interesting, because we talk about, for example, organizations like the American Red Cross and MSF and how they respond in times of emergency and crisis. The readings range from 10-50 pages per week, but are usually interesting. I would recommend reading before lecture and coming prepared with questions. She can talk very quickly but is very much aware of it and has asked for feedback from students about workload and how she can make class more engaging. When I took the class, the assignments for the semester were three online, closed-book, multiple-choice quizzes and two-three short essays. Her questions were fair and the essay prompts were pretty straightforward. Some may say that Professor Scherz is esoteric, but I say that she is passionate about the subject and wants her students to understand why. I highly recommend this class as a good introduction to social and cultural anthropology or as an elective for anthropology majors.
