Professor Harold is a true UVa gem. She is an engaging and passionate lecturer with a lot of knowledge about the topic. Her course is relatively easy as well, she is well aware of her reputation as an "easy" grader and has no desire to change that reputation, so long as people actually learn in her class. Great professor, great class. Definitely recommend this.

Claudrena Harold is the best professor I've had at U.Va. She is visibly passionate about the topic and has inspired me to take more classes in the field. Clear, informative, and inspiring lectures.

Professor Harold is great. The lectures are always engaging. This course will change how you think about modern history and politics. There's a lot of reading, but the deeper understanding it offers makes it clearly worth doing. Highly recommended.

Take this class. Porf. Harold is a great lecturer. She made me want to go to class, I barely missed one. I hadn't taken an AAS or and african american history class, and still did fine. You can get away with not doing the reading, so long as you be sure to read some and include it in papers and exams.

Professor Harold assigned WAY too much reading for each lecture. Sometimes she couldn't get some of the articles up on Toolkit and would cancel them, so that tells you how important each and every single one of them is. She assigned around 7 or 8 books to buy but really only focused on three of them in lectures. The key to this class is guessing which articles to read, or just reading the ones she mentions after the lectures.

The class is pretty easy though, because I didn't do any of the readings and I got a B+. I probably could have gotten an A if I had done better on the papers. To her credit she did cancel one of the three papers and give everybody an A.

Professor Harold is very passionate about what she teaches, which makes lectures engaging. But it can be hard to follow what she is talking about sometimes. There is a ridiculous amount of reading. However, I didn't even do half of the readings but am still doing well in the course. There is a lot of material that she covers but I highly recommend it if you are looking to broaden your history in a different perspective than what you've learned in high school.

Professor Harold is really passionate and knows the material extremely well, but I would not recommend this class if you do not have previous knowledge of African American Studies. The reading load is overwhelming, but very interesting.

Amazing, one of my favorite classes at UVA. Awesome readings, manageable work load, very fair tests, compelling lectures.
