This is the first language class that I have enjoyed, ever. I finished up the language requirement for the College in my second year with another language and decided to take Swahili not as a requirement, but purely out of interest. This was one of the best decisions I have made as a student. Professor Rotich is amazing at what she does, and she finds a way to make learning a new language and the culture of its large speaker base exciting and intuitive. Never once did I feel like the class was going too fast or that I had missed something integral to later learning and was behind. We learned how to speak, write, and read in Swahili at a beginner level, and started to learn some of the various noun classes Swahili has, which I assume will be a more central topic in higher levels. If you are looking for a fun class to add to your course load, consider Swahili with Prof. Rotich!

I highly recommend Dkt. Anne. She explains material thoroughly, and also intertwines the information with its cultural context. In addition to learning Swahili, we have had the opportunity to eat and cook Swahili food, as well as have learned songs and dances. She truly cares that her students are learning in a well rounded environment.
