Good class... interesting material, but the exams are pretty tough. You literally have to know EVERYTHING from both the lectures and the book (though more is from lectures) and even then you can still be stumped. Something like 15 multiple choice questions and the rest are essay questions that can be overly specific and nitpicky.
Horrible class, based on these reviews I thought this would be an awesome class... but no. His classes are interesting, simple subject, not hard at all. Readings are pretty fun. I did everything I was supposed to, left the first test thinking I had aced it and ended up failing. Completely unfair, his tests are half multiple choice and half free response so he must've not given me any credit for the free response even though the questions were easy and I wrote down everything from his lectures and book. Unfair grading I asked to go over my test with him and he suggested I talk to the TA's. I will be withdrawing from this class.
Prof Emery is one of the best professors I've had here. He's very friendly in office hours, extremely enthusiastic in class, and highly knowledgeable considering he wrote the textbook. What you learn in this class is interesting, but not too different from Abnormal Psychology. There are, however, a lot of readings you have to do for this class, and they're not always enjoyable. As well, the tests can be pretty difficult. But, Prof Emery does give you some of the short answer questions during lecture, so make sure you attend and pay attention!
Emery is a really cool guy and a pretty good lecturer; his lectures are very informal and he really takes the time to engage with the class. Good thing, too, because a huge chunk of his exams are based on the lectures, so you don't want to miss them. The subject matter is interesting on its own, but Emery usually adds his own cool twists to it. Exams are not easy, but grading is generally fair and TA's are pretty lenient.
I would recommend this class! Emery is a great professor! I'm not usually a morning person, but I genuinely enjoyed going to his class. I think that the material is super interesting, and he includes stories from his experience which make it overall super enjoyable. Beware though, the only grades come from 4 exams. You really have to study and know all of the material and while I enjoyed this class, I'll probably finish with a B, which I'd say isn't uncommon according to VA Grades. I'd recommend attending lectures or getting notes from friends if you missed because he sends out the PowerPoints but they're a bit confusing if you weren't in class to listen. I wish I had more to do all of the readings and read the textbook because this is super interesting! This class is also similar to Abnormal Psychology that he also teaches, so if you enjoyed that you'll probably enjoy this. Definitely take this class for a psych requirement.
