Jordan is one of my favorite professors. He will tell you like it is in the world. He starts out with a nice treatment of background and indeed this is a very good survey course of the last 200 years of Latin America. Still he also manages to tell you the realities from his experiences as an Ambassador to Peru in the 1980s. Also try his seminars.
This has been one of my least favorite courses at UVA. Although the professor is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to the course material, he goes off on tangents all the time and I rarely take anything away from the class. His grading on the midterm was pretty generous, but he's a stickler when it comes to papers. It's very hard to pay attention because his voice is so monotone and he sits at the front of the class and just rambles on every single class.
