Professor is not a good lecturer. Lots of back-of-the-envelope calculations, no real work outside of class besides studying lecture slides.

The course material is extremely interesting, but Professor Shivaram is a horrible lecturer. He almost never makes eye contact with the students when lecturing, the slides have too many words on them, he goes through the slides too fast to take notes, over half of the class stopped coming to the lecture after the first three weeks or so due to this (I only missed one lecture over the course of the semester), and the homework and exams are virtually incomprehensible. The only times that the class was relatively interesting / understandable was when there were guest speakers. If you want to take this class, I recommend that you do so with a different professor or avoid the class all together instead.

Professor Shivaram lectures nervously and poorly, never once making eye contact with the students. His slides are inconsistent and needlessly verbose, prompting more than 3/4 of the class to abandon attending lecture. The material should be interesting, but the homeworks and exams are effectively nothing more than re-deriving equations, and the lecture material was less effective than a youtube video.
Under no circumstances should I recommend a student take this class, unless required for your major.
