The class is not super hard throughout the semester, but then it all piles up on the end when you're forced to actually learn everything for a very hard final exam. Attendance is 10%, you do 2 short homework writing papers on specific passages for 7.5% each and then one short 5-6 page paper on a topic of your choice for 15%, but then a term paper for 30% due the last day of class and a final exam for 30%. So while you can not do the reading the whole year and get by very easily, the final comes around and you have to know a little about everything. He gives you 22 questions before and then 10-12 appear in 2 sections (before/post spring break) and you do 2 from each section. Actually just got out of the final exam. All in all, pretty great class and you learn a lot truly. And, couldn't say higher things about Prof D. He's not very engaging and lecture honestly blows, but he's amazing if you seek him out & he has paper conferences for every paper (even the writing assignments) where you go and he explains your grade and how to do better next time. And he requires a draft for the term paper which helps too. Very manageable class to get a B+ in, but, as my first ever philosophy class, not easy to get up into the A/A- range unless philosophy really clicks with you.
Overall, I enjoyed this class and Prof. Devereux is so sweet and kind. However, the class is pretty demanding. The work load isn't too bad, but so much of your grade is concentrated at the end of the semester with a final paper due the last day of class and the final less than a week later. The middle part of the class is the hardest to grasp, but Prof. Devereux is good at explaining the material. However, he has very high expectations for details and is critical is how precise you are in explaining Aristotle, which can be a challenge. I would say the class is very interesting and enjoyable, but it isn't very easy. Not too hard and Prof. Devereux is great one on one in office hours, but more particular than other classes.
