Your grade might not represent what you learned in the course. Although I feel like this was the most enriching economics course I've taken at UVA, where I actually wanted to go to class, I wouldn't say my grade reflects that (which I am perfectly okay with but I know of a lot of people who wouldn't want that). Take this class if you can, it definitely re-sparked my passion for economics that intermediate micro and econometrics took away and I'm quite grateful for that.

I took this class because it was highly recommended on here. I did find this class to be very interesting and Coppock is a pretty good lecturer and actively makes the class engaging. His grading is pretty harsh though. There is not much room for redemption if you do bad on his first exam (which I also found to be the case in macro). I feel like the amount of effort I put into the class wasn't reflected in my final grade. Coppock does warn you in the first class that most of us won't get an A. I see that now. I somehow got an A in ECON 3010 but not in this class. Overall, if you care about your GPA, don't take this class unless you are ready to put effort in from the start. Otherwise, the material was interesting and I learned a lot. #tCFfall2021
Professor Coppock is incredibly competent and familiar with the material. He's very good at communicating content, and his lectures are very engaging 90-95% of the time. If you do the readings and take good notes on them, it's not hard to excel in this class. This content made me wonder if I ought to pursue a PhD in economics, because it's so interesting to me.
Hands down, best class I have taken at UVA. Professor Coppock is one of my all time favorite professors as well after this class. This class is great because you get to study the seminal works of public choice economics by reading the original research papers. And even though they can get pretty confusing, Professor Coppock always makes sure to explain things well in class the next day. The material is really interesting, Professor Coppock is really kind and wants to know all the students and works to make sure they succeed, and the class is an unforgettable experience. If you can get into the class, definitely take it! #tCF2020
Definitely apply to get in the class, and if he lets you in, you'd be a fool not to take this class. He tries to scare you on the first day of class but if you do the readings, go to lectures and study in advance for the exams you won't get below a B. Without a doubt, the BEST class I've taken at UVA. Each topic is super interesting, and Coppock makes everything easy to understand in lecture. On that note -- don't miss lectures...ever. Also don't go to lecture if you're not ready to participate. You learn nearly everything you need for exams in lecture, and if you don't go to lecture following a tough reading you'll be totally lost. While some of the readings include math proofs and expansions, you can almost always gloss over those; math isn't something that is stressed in this course, which is nice. The class is definitely more about understanding concepts and applying them. This is one of those few courses where I plan to save all of my notes and readings so I can read them later on -- the material is that fascinating.
Easily the best Economics course I have taken at this school. Coppock keeps the lectures very interesting and does a great job of giving examples to help explain more difficult concepts. Overall very doable class (B+/A-) if you don't skip lecture, do the readings, and maintain a solid interest in the material. Highly recommend taking this class.
One of the best classes I've ever taken. Coppock is a gifted professor and knows how to make a topic super interesting. The exams are tricky but I got so much out of this class that I'll use with me the rest of my life. If you can get in, definitely take this class. Worth the early class time.
You just can't go wrong with Coppock. You do have to be prepared to work hard and to be intellectually challenged - you can't really have fun if you just want to get by. That said, if you are a Econ major, this class will stay with you and benefit you in so many different ways in the future. If you're taking it for Professor Coppock, it's still totally worth the while. He is an amazing teacher, if you really engage yourself in the class you will find it so rewarding.
Mr. Coppock is the best instructor in the Economics department. Take this class if you can.
This was hands down the best class i've taken at UVA. There is a fair amount of reading but most of it is quite interesting, and professor Coppock does a great job of making the more complicated stuff make sense. You definitely have to work hard for a good grade, but Coppock is very helpful at office hours and genuinely wants his students to succeed. You absolutely HAVE to go to class, as he covers a ton of material every day. Overall it is a challenging course, but if you're like me it will totally change the way you look at economics and politics. Highly recommend this class.
