I don't care what anyone else says or thing. Professor Shirts is great. Nobody has any idea how hard it is to build a course from the bottom up while doing a million other things as a new professor. As far as the work goes, we will thank him in the end when we actually leave this class knowing as much as possible instead of just sliding by. Its a difficult class but with good reason, it should not be easy its a chemical engineering class for crying out loud!! I give him an A+ because frankly I have no reason not to. Hes very helpful, very friendly, and a very knowledgeable person. Its a lot of work but now at the end of the semester I can be glad I learned as much as I did!
The person that wrote the last review MUST be on crack. This was the worst class I have ever taken, and to boot I walked out of the classroom having learned less in my second year than I should have due to all 20 hours of work a week for this stupid class in which I will never use any of the stupid formulas he made us memorize. It is like taking two different classes with about 4 times the work. The tests have nothing to due with the homework which on average take about 20 hours a week. Unless you are Bill Gates and can program with your eyes closed this class is going to be miserable. Get ready. You will contemplate your decision to be ChemE
I'm going to have to agree with the first reviewer. Shirt's is all around a pretty good professor. He's a greenhorn professor, he's not going to have really polished lectures (TONS of typos) or really refined techniques. He genuinely gives a crap about making the course better... though sometimes at your sanity's expense. Really good at clarifying in office hours as long as you give the material a shot first.
The only thing wrong with this class is that because we have to learn all of the complex numerical methods, the homework takes forever. Literally forever. Which takes away from most people's perspectives of the class. Shirts is a cool guy. He is very knowledgeable and very willing to help with any sort of problem you may have. Except, there really is no help for the fact that the homework takes so long and that you really would rarely have to know how MATLAB uses the numerical methods.
