Dobbins is a great professor. He is engaged in class and loves to make things interesting. Very knowledgable in the subject area considering he excavates at pompeii every summer. The pictures in his lecture are cool because we are studying pieces of art/architecture that he has seen in person. Everyday after class it makes me want to travel to Italy or study abroad! I would definitely suggest the course if you are interested in the ancient Roman world. It also counts as a historical credit, which is an added bonus. Section with Rob Gotham is also not boring at all, which is a change in pace from other art history discussions I have been in. Awesome class! ‎#tcf2016‬

This class is very difficult because of the sheer amount of information that you have to memorize. Dobbins is a good teacher, but don't take this class if you aren't genuinely interested in learning about Roman art.

Dobbins is a fantastic professor. Very clear lecturer, makes topics very interesting and accessible (e.g. comparing ancient architecture to UVA's), answered questions in class, and worked hard to get to know individual students (in the first few weeks he knew every student's name who was early to class). Discussions were good review but also we learned new material that Dobbins didn't have time to cover in class. Dobbins is also an archaeology professor, so a large part of the class is spent discussing archaeological methods. Overall, interesting material, great TA's, and a definite class to take.

One of the most incredible courses at UVA and one of the most incredible professors at UVA. You will learn a lot!

Don't take it if you're new to art history. I took it by curiosity but didn't do so well. If you are willing to memorize hundreds of words and random buildings and if you know how to name them and explain them all, you are good to go. If not, I don't recommend it.

This class is great! It can get a little boring and monotone at times, but the overall concepts are great. Dobbins tries to crack jokes and puts a lot of effort and love for Roman Art. Also, at the end of the semester he has a special presentation for his students.

The class was challenging, but not overly difficult. The readings aren't necessary until you study. The book is a good reference on pieces of art when your notes aren't satisfactory. It's two quizes, a final, and a midterm paper! GREAT COURSE!

I absolutely love John Dobbins! He is so enthusiastic about the course material. His midterms and finals can be fairly easy - as long as you memorize every slide we've looked at in class. The readings aren't really necessary but I enjoyed them anyways. I would try to get Ismini because she is always looking out for her students.
