This is probably the easiest class at UVa. You don't have to go to class, and you only have to writes 3 papers. There are no midterms or finals. The papers are on the books you are supposed to read, but if you get a hold of the study guides you don't even have to read the books. The teacher is the weirdest guy you will ever meet, but I don't care because he hands out A's like the police in Virgina hand out speeding tickets.
This class is a lot of fun. Professor explains the reading material in class. If you attend class and read minutely, it will be an easy class. In a class of 240+; maybe 30-40 people regularly attend. If you like the teachings of Don Juan and Castaneda then you will enjoy the class even more since you will be able to engage with the professor and ask questions/compare opinions.
Just 3 papers - no exams. Reading is fun, but overall useless - go to class to pick up the study sheets each lecture which outline the concepts exactly as he likes to understand them. For the papers, everything you need is on those study sheets. Don't need to read or listen in class, just use the study sheets and you'll get A's on every paper.
Class is really abstract and very hard to understand. However it's almost impossible to get worse than a B in the class.
It's made up of three papers, no final. The papers are pretty hard to write because they are so abstract. But pick the most vague topic, find the study sheets that relate to the topic, and then summarize those study sheets in your own words. The first essay was really frustrating to write, but once you get going, it's not too bad.
Going to class is definitely not necessary. There are about 15-20 people (out of 200) on average that actually go to class every day. The only reason to go to class would be to pick up the study sheets for the essays.
Overall, I didn't learn much but it's an easy class with minimal work so I would recommend it.
