Professor Jacques might be one of the better professors to take STS 4600 with. Our only tasks throughout the semester were reading four novels and writing our sts research paper. We would have in class discussions every lecture talking about 4-5 chapters of whatever book we were on, led by a different group of 4-5 students each day. The research paper had reasonable deadlines, though we had pretty much zero guidance. Professor Jacques would send feedback for the paper via email, which he seemed to have issues with all semester (not sending you emails or missing emails that you sent him). In short, Professor Jacques is the most disorganized professor I encounter at UVA but you discuss modern issues and read decent books instead of reading academic papers and discussing ancient STS frameworks. Definitely worth the trade off in my opinion, but YMMV. Sidenote: Despite being disorganized, Professor Jacques is a really cool, nice dude with an interesting government background. He facilitated some high quality discussions and graded leniently. He was disorganized, but like I said, I'll take that over reading boring STS papers and talking about STS frameworks. #tCF2020
