Prof. Achilles is by far one of the most amazing history professors at UVA. She's very well versed with the topic and speaks from first-hand experience as well. She's very inclusive and cares about you. She's willing to be available on all platforms necessary. Without any effort, it's an easy B+/A-, so I'm sure it's more rewarding if you work harder. Overall, best history class ever. Loved it.

This class was a lot of fun. I normally hate history but it was a good way to learn big-picture stuff. A lot of reading but they are all very interesting. And you discuss them in class so you can generally get by if you don't finish a book all the way. Achilles is super knowledgeable but a hard grader.
Really interesting material for the class. It's 3 papers and 1 page response papers every week and one presentation on a reading. Not a ton of work but not incredibly easy. Worth it if you are interested in German history and World War II at all. Liked it even though not a history major/minor.
I loved this class. At first I was intimidated because I came in knowing nothing about German history but I left the class knowing a lot. You read really good stuff like the "communist manifesto", "Nathan the Wise" and some other boring reading but for the most part we had really good class discussions. Only three short papers (5 pages) and a presentation. Good films too! Go talk to her and she's SOO nice and willing to help!
The professor is excellent and encouraged different student opinions throughout all the discussions. It is not a normal history course, though, so if you are looking to learn about specific events in German history a different class would be better.
