The class challenging the homeworks are HARD. But very rewarding and fun. Go to office hours, submit to the extra credit email, and read the textbook. Hott is amazing, the TA's are amazing. But be careful on the homeworks because you can lose ALOT of points by not explaining EVERYTHING.

This is my favorite computer science class to date. John Hott and Tom Horton (plus the incredible TAs) absolutely nailed this class on the head. Most of the coursework is written homeworks, which are difficult and take a lot of time, but are extremely rewarding. Start them early, find a good group, and go to office hours (especially instructor office hours) and you'll be fine.
Hott is a competent lecturer and a nice guy who genuinely cares about his students. The material can be dry and mathy at times and the problem sets are on the hard side, but it was never unmanageable unlike a certain compArch teacher's course (V*nkat - name blurred for privacy). I suggest skimming the textbook to get an idea of a lecture's topic before lecture and reviewing the material after lecture to make sure you get everything afterward. The exams resemble the practice exams. He records all lectures, so you can pause when you don't get something and FF thru the slow parts. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
This class is a difficult course and Hott know this, so he tries his absolute best to help students through it. His lecturing ability although engaging, the material can be dry which makes it hard to follow in class at times but he records all lectures. He's very kinda and is reasonable with homework due dates, as well as plenty of extra credit opportunities. Exams have review sessions that cover all material on exams, so attend those. Problem sets can be difficult but if you put in the time to work through them in office hours you'll do fine. Typing homework in latex can be annoying but be sure not to take shortcuts or you'll lose points.
Prof. Hott is a really good lecturer. He posts his slides and notes online, making review easier, and is very helpful at office hours. The homeworks are somewhat difficult, but overall very manageable if you put in the time to understand the material. He grades somewhat harshly, but is rather generous with extra credit opportunities and regrades. He wants to see you succeed, but you have to be willing to learn the material and put in the effort to succeed. Overall, I would recommend this class. I have found it both fun and informative.
I really liked Professor Hott a lot. He's a good lecturer and goes at a pace so he can ensure that everybody understands what he's saying. He's also super helpful and patient at office hours and will sit with you to work out a homework problem!
