The course is very detail oriented and thus you have to pay extreme attention to a lot of what is written in the book. The book isn't stellar, at times it can be pretty confusing and you'll have to reread sections multiple times just to get a semblance of what they are getting at. This may not seem like a big deal, but unfortunately it is because if you have Eichelberger as a professor, it will be the only real resource you will have. He is an awful professor, plain and simple. Nice guy, but he is incredibly quiet, disorganized, and will launch into examples without providing proper context. Often times he will just move on from topic to topic, and anytime he wants us to write definitions he just slaps them on a projector and sits there in silence while everyone writes it down, no explanation. It got to the point where no one was showing up to class, which he complained about, and then punished people on the second exam by adding two questions you only would've known had you gone to class. Overall, it is an interesting class with tons of practical uses, but Eichelberger made it a frustrating experience. I recommend the class, just not with him.
I have never disliked a class more in my entire life. I ended up getting an A-, but it was not worth the stress. Eichelberger (don't know why they always left him as staff) was honestly the worst professor i have ever had. He would throw up pages under a camera projector where everyone would just copy them down for like 4 minutes in silence and then he would do random practice problems from the book that had absolutely no correlation with material on the tests. Our first test was super easy, second was super hard, and the final was easy again. He really had no clue how to teach and treated the class like everyone was 10 years old offering candy for people who answered questions. He tried to teach a lecture of 140 like it was a 20 person class, so when people started skipping because nobody was getting anything out of lecture, he screwed them on the test out of spite. He made 2 questions (out of 30 so that is a lot to lose) based off of one guest lecture that had absolutely no relevance to the class and never mentioned the importance of it. I luckily guessed right on 1 of the 2 so i got lucky. You can obviously say that we should all of just attended class but it was so hard to pay attention when i did that i would just zone out almost all class. Overall if you read the textbook and studied you could probably get a B+ with him bc home work and the group project were easy grades and then two of the tests were pretty easy. However, i doubt he will be hired back to teach this class so this review might be worthless lol.
I took it with Katie McDermott. She's really nice and understanding. I just had such a hard time with the class and grasping concepts. The concepts never clicked for me, and I was a noob at UVA so I didn't withdrawal the class in time. Granted, I was also taking a bunch of other weed out classes and couldn't dedicate much time to this class. I have so much respect for people do accounting now. As for my grade... Let's not ever talk about it. Ever.
