Professor Backof is very sweet and good at teaching the material. Financial accounting is not an easy topic to understand. Highly recommend doing as many practice problems as possible and working with her or her GA's during office hours. There are two midterms and a final as well as weekly homework assignments. It is easy to get 100% on the homework.
I was very scared to take this class due to the rumors and reviews, however Professor Backof is great! I never once fell asleep during her lectures because she made the material interesting. The exams and homework are definitely tricky, but if you put in the work and study the material well, you will be fine. I also recommend her office hours, as she easily clears up questions about her notes. Also- find a group to study with as it helps A LOT!
I came into this class thinking it would be extremely difficult and I would constantly be frustrated and hate the class. Boy was I wrong. Professsor Backof really knows her stuff and teaches the class really well. She's a fair teacher and the material isn't very difficult to learn. As long as you go to class, take notes, do the homework, and progressively learn the material, you'll find that the tests are very doable. Each midterm is 25 questions and the final is 50 questions. All the tests are 100% multiple choice, which I thought was a bad thing but turned out to be a blessing. This is because her questions tend to have only three choices so it's much easier to narrow down to the correct answer.
Strongly recommend Backof, as long as you are prepared to attend class. Material to be tested on the exam explicitly covered in class and reinforced in the homework. While she only requires a score of 80% on the homework to receive full credit, having unlimited attempts and the aforementioned material being introduced thoroughly in class makes it easy to finish it all, and I know that individuals who settled for only completing 85% or so didn't do as well come exam time. Tests were fair and relatively easy.
Backof is a terrific intro professor, she does well to make the class as interesting as she can (some days better than others), and the course (especially coming from the E-School) was a breeze.
Meet with your end of semester paper group early, get it out of the way.
If you go to class regularly, keep up with homework (only 80% is needed to get 100% on the HW portion of the final grade), attend review sessions and office hours, and read the textbook, you'll do well in this class. You get back exactly what you put into the class. Midterms and Final can be intimidating, as each question equates to roughly 1% of your final grade. That being said, I'd recommend this class to those interested in the Comm School and the Engineering Business Minor. There are better classes to take if you want a grasp of personal finance.
Backof teaches financial accounting well. You don't need to read the textbook because everything including problems are in her notes. As long as you fill out her notes in class, and do/understand the practice tests, you should be fine. Tests can be a little stressful because there's only 24 or so questions but the questions are hella wordy. Financial is mainly math, but don't ignore the concepts + other non math notes. She's very helpful in office hours but the lines are hella long usually.
