Definitely an interesting course. I took the Edgar Allan Poe COLA in the fall 2021 semester. This COLA met once a week for an hour and fifteen minutes. Having a friend who is taking the course at the same time definitely helps get through the weekly classes. Classes were like awkward high school English class discussions. I was a big fan of Poe's work, hence why I signed up for the course, and I was exposed to works of his that I hadn't previously read as well as reading known works such as "The Raven". The work involved in this class consists of reading 1-3 assigned works written by Poe or supplemental reading and writing a one page journal to turn in during class detailing your response and reactions to Poe's work, really just busywork. We took a small field trip to the Small Special Collections Library to look at some primary documents of Poe's as well as official records from his time here at UVA and other very interesting things housed in the library (I believe we got to see a stone with writing on it from the Babylonian Empire). If you need a one credit course to fill up your schedule this is definitely interesting in its own way and has very little work outside of class.
