This class is ridiculously difficult for an intro class. Leung does NOT teach. He merely reads off power points during lecture and goes off on tangents about how everyone will either fail his class or any other class in the chemistry department. While he tries to appear that he is open to helping students, he is not personally approachable and seems to find answering questions to be more of a burden than anything else. He uses ALEKS, an awful system that does not actually help in the learning process if you don't first understand the concepts it is testing you on, to assess how much the class is learning. The textbook, although it is only officially suggested by Leung, is truly required if you want to learn anything. The questions he asks on quizzes and tests don't seek to see if you have mastered the overall content of chapters, but rather to see if you can answer his trick questions. Overall I don't recommend this class or Leung to anyone. Take it only if you need it for engineering, pre-med, etc, but take it with another professor.

Do not take this course your first year, ruins college experience. The material is fantastic, Leung is a hard-working professor, but the tests are impossible. I would definitely recommend this course to a second year, who is used to a large course load. To pre-med first years, start with biology, Kittleson is amazing!

Way harder than an intro chem class should be. The material in itself is not difficult, but the way that professor leung tests makes the grades sink. He is very hard working and lends himself easily to questions and emails, but the tests and quizzes are completely and utterly different from the lecture, homework, and other coursework

This class was not fun at all. The subject is interesting and the teacher is passionate about it, but the curriculum and the way it was taught wasn't very good. You have to spend an abnormal amount of time teaching yourself for an "intro" class. Personally it seemed like the professor made it much harder than it needed to be. If you take this, make sure you take a few classes that are "easy As" or be prepared for putting a lot of time into it.

Professor Leung is very passionate about his field and he seems to put a lot of effort into trying to teach effectively; however, he has not been very successful. The material itself should not be difficult, but the ways in which he tests on the material and the amount of time he spends in lecture going off on abstract tangents makes it hard to know when you have mastered the material that you need. However, the textbook and the online homework assignments help with self-directed study, and Leung makes himself available through e-mail and office hours, so if you put it the work and the time, you can do relatively well in the class. C and D averages on tests and quizzes before the curve are still very common, though.

Leung is the most frustrating teacher. We don't explicitly use the textbook, but we do use a poorly crafted web program called ALEKS. The tests and quizzes do not reflect lectures, and thus the averages are very low. On top of that, he is very difficult to understand. If I could complain more, I would.

The class doesn't have too much work but the quizzes and tests are pretty different from the homework and the questions we do in class. Average for the first test was a 62% and the average for the second test was a 68%
