Great class, definitely take it! Fascinating subject material ranging from international genocides to the history of slavery at UVA. I know a lot of people didn't do the reading in full, but I would say try to do as much of it as you can, because it really is interesting and provides such a perspective into many issues. Pre- and post-class reflections are no problem, just try to be thoughtful in relating the material to discussions/current events/your life. If you take the class seriously and contribute in class, Dukes will appreciate that. Not a hard class, but take it because the subject interests you and you will get so much more out of it!

Definitely recommend this class at USEM. Homework is all reading (which you can skim) but is interesting for the most part. Great topics brought up in class--I learned a lot. You also have many guest speakers come and talk to your class. Final project is with a group and on a topic you choose collectively.

There are readings each week, but you only need to skim them at most. Each week there is a post-class reflection that is 700 words, but it is only graded on completion. There is a group project which seems to be pretty simple. The topic is interesting, but the 2 hour time period goes by very slowly.

Really easy class. Essays take about a half an hour and don't really even have to be about the reading. Just bring up interesting topics and he gives you an A.

Such an awesome class, great discussions and a new perspective on a lot of issues. It CAN be boring cause its 2 hours long, so bring coffee and stay engaged in the discussion. Readings are great and all you have is one short essay a week. Not a tough A at all.

The most interesting class I have ever taken. We disscuss parts of history in which Americans or other countries may have made mistakes, such as the Holocaust, internment camps for the Japanese, and genocides occuring in Latin America and Africia. Many of my classes had guest speakers and all of the classes were discussions. A short, weekly essay was due every Sunday relating to the current topic, but I felt Professor Dukes graded rather easy on the essays. Also, if you could relate the current topic to a personal situation you may have encountered, not only did Professor Dukes seem to enjoy the essay better, but it was also easier writing the essay.
