Death, Dying, and Bereavement- NO assignments for this class, BARELY any reading required (he assigned things every week but we did not discuss them in the least during class). Every person in the class got an A on all 3 of the papers (could be on any subject we chose). Professor Rick definitely has some cool insights on life and is a really funny guy. This was a 2 hour class once a week, but on the first day Rick goes "I get bored after an hour so I'll let out guys out after an hour every class". If you can get into this class, DEFINITELY take it. 2 credits for literally no work!!!!
Dr. Steeves is an amazing, knowledgeable professor, and the class is what you make of it. If everyone talks, the conversations can get very interesting, but when the conversation doesn't go anywhere, the room feels very awkward and thensome. The papers were not graded harshly, but there was no defined rubric so you never knew if what you were writing fit what was wanted. That being said, you got to choose your topic (as long as it somewhat related to what was discussed in class). Overall, I would recommend this course to anyone looking for a somewhat stress-free class and a good discussion with an amazing professor (side note: he used to be a professor in the School of Nursing and now focuses more so as a nurse practitioner; he teaches this class as a professor emeritus).
Professor Steeves is AMAZING! The class usually only lasts for one hour and it is heavily discussion based. The reading is kind of a lot but most of them are very worth reading. The class only have three 5-pages essays and everyone gets an A. Professor Steeves's life experience is super rich and he is a great story teller. Highly recommended for the 1st years. It will be the one of the most relaxing, enjoyable class that gives you comfort when you're overwhelmed by college life.
I loved this class with Professor Steeves! The course is interesting and does not require a lot of time outside of class. There are occasionally a few readings, some a little longer than others, but overall, minimal effort is required. Class consists of discussions that go off on tangents. While the class shows 3:30-6:00, Rick let us leave at 4:30 every Tuesday. There are three essays you have to write, but they are so easy, and I got an A on all of them. I actually switched into this USEM after absolutely hating my other one, and I am so glad I did it! This is a great buffer class if your schedule is ridiculously hard and you need a class that counts, but doesn't require much.
The main thing you need to know is that this class, even though it's supposed to be 2 1/2 hours a week, he only keeps you in class for 1 (he literally sets a timer on his phone for one hour and when it goes off, just gets up and leaves). Super easy and you don't have to participate if you don't want to. Grading is from 3 papers, but as long as you follow instructions, you will get an A; the instructions are just things like "no intro- just a thesis, underline topic sentences, don't use 'there' more than once" and if you follow this criteria you get an A. Highly recommend for an easy extra 2 credits and as a GPA boost.
The class may have been different because it was virtual, but I highly recommend this course for anyone looking to add another two credits to their schedule or get an A. We had weekly readings which mostly took half an hour or less, a discussion board post to write what we thought about the reading which did not have to be very long, and class discussions which were very relaxed and easy to participate in. I was able to think and learn about death in interesting ways with essentially zero stress the entire semester, and Professor Steeves is very nice! Also, he only held class for 1 hour instead of the longer time SIS says.
