WORK: Weekly translations on wordpress. Very easy midterm with a take home translation and in-class vocab exam. Final project of a large translation of your choice.

Alexa is a grad student who is really nice. This is her first semester teaching the class so she will probably make some changes to the workload but I would still expect it to be easy. She is a very fair grader, always willing to help with your translations in office hours and also very hot lol. Highly recommend this class

Great professor, I highly recommend. There were weekly translations for completion, two of which you picked to turn in for a grade. We also had weekly translation theory readings with 2-3 sentence long discussion posts. There's also a group presentation on theory and a 10 page final translation but she makes the final project very manageable. She also has rubrics for every assignment and is very flexible and willing to help.

I absolutely loved this class with Profe Jeffress!! She is very sweet and smart. This semester we had synchronous class M/W and asynchronous Friday. Every week you had to do a short translation (which were graded for completion) and choose two from the semester to turn in for a grade. We had to do one theory presentation, and many of the asynchronous classes were commenting on other groups' presentations. We also had 5 blog posts about translation articles during the semester. The final project is a 10 page translation of the text of your choosing with a 2-3 page translators note. There's plenty of opportunities to peer edit and go to office hours to get a good grade on that (which is worth 30% of your final grade). Overall, this was a great class that wasn't too stressful. Profe Alexa was a nice grader and generally gave very thorough feedback. There wasn't a lot of theory in this class, but you did get a lot of real-world practice in a lot of different genres which I think is really valuable. Would definitely recommend!

This was one of my favorite classes I have ever taken at UVA! As most people taking upper level Spanish classes know, at this point you're usually not learning new vocab or anything really new, more just exercising/applying what you've learned in the past. This class is definitely an exception in the best way! I feel like I learned so much in this class and it really is not much work at all. It also counts as a 4000-level literature class which I didn't know, which was great for me because I don't love literature classes. The workload was SO manageable - basically you have one super manageable translation per week which is due Monday before class for completion. I took this in Spring 2021 so this was a totally online, COVID semester so we met synchronously on Zoom Monday/Wednesday and had asynchronous work on Friday. So basically you would complete your preliminary translation for completion on your own over the weekend and then workshop it in small breakout rooms and later as a class Monday and Wednesday. Sometimes there was another small reading due Wednesday (nothing to turn in) but honestly you didn't really have to do it, but I did because I was interested! Once in the semester you would have a 5 min group recorded presentation on a theory reading, but you signed up for a date that worked for your schedule and it really wasn't bad. Asynchronous work on Fridays would either be a 400 word blog post responding to some articles or commenting on another group's presentation. I think Alexa graduated, but she was super chill, helpful, and accommodating!! I got an A with minimal effort and loved the class. DEFINITELY take this class!
