Despite being nervous to take my first foreign language course at UVA, Professor Young made this class engaging and enjoyable. She was very organized and clear with what was expected of her students, which eased my anxiety and allowed me to excel. She was always open to questions and responded to emails promptly. I would definitely recommend taking her class.
Professor Young is such an amazing professor who genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed. She is very organized and always keeps the class on track, which makes it easy to know exactly what is due and when. She is also an excellent teacher who explains concepts clearly and is always willing to help if you reach out. Beyond being a great professor, she is truly nice and approachable, which made the class feel welcoming and encouraging. I highly recommend taking this course with Professor Young!
Professor Young is an awesome Spanish professor. Much of the Spanish curriculum is standardized across the department, but she did a great job in laying out expectations and directions for assignments ahead of time in class so that there was no confusion. She always brought great energy and enthusiasm each day. I came into the class slightly worried having not taken Spanish since early in high school, but it is definitely doable (I received an A for the course). She is very approachable if you have questions or are confused about a concept, and there were always extra practice questions posted. We did lots of partner work/discussion activities during class as well, so I felt prepared heading into a quiz or exam.
Definitely go through the exam review documents as these were very helpful in preparing for the content and structure of each exam. For the oral exams, these seemed daunting at first, but plenty of practice opportunities were given during class working in the Language Lab and using the headphones that are used for the oral exam. As a professor, Prof. Young is amazing. I have nothing but great things to say. If you have the opportunity to take a Spanish course with her, I'd highly recommend it.
Professor Young is an amazing professor. She is very engaging in the classroom and is very helpful to her students. She provides you with many resources to succeed and prepares you extremely well for the quizzes and the exams. She is very kind and bubbly during class which really helps the morale of the classroom.
Prof. Young is such a wonderful professor and person! She has such a genuine passion for teaching Spanish and it really shows in her engagement with her students and the way she conducts her class. I took her class at 8 am; despite the class being very early, I was always welcomed with a joyful envionrment and an engaging lecture. This class does require a considerable amount of outside work (homework assignments, readings, etc.) but Prof. Young is very accomodating and always willing to help if difficulty arrises. She is also very quick to respond to emails and help reschedule quizzes/exams due to extenuating circumstances. I loved being in her class and wish I could take another class under her! One of the most caring professors I have learned under. Highly recommend!!
I took SPAN 2010 during my first semester at UVA, and I hadn't taken a Spanish class since the fall of my sophomore year of high school. I was super nervous, but from the first day, Professor Young made it clear that this course would be okay. She kept the course extremely structured, which helped me a lot, as all of the expectations for each class were made very clear. I felt very prepared for quizzes, exams, and the speaking tests. I never felt I would get in trouble for getting a question wrong in Spanish. There is online textbook grammar homework for each class, as well as a longer final project. Both were easy to manage. I know the 2000-level Spanish gradescale is a bit high, but with a little effort outside of class, it's really easy to do well. I would highly recommend this class and specifically Professor Young!
Professor Young was an amazing professor. She was extremely organized and understanding. The set-up for the class is like any other Spanish class at UVA. There are online assignments for homework, quizzes, exams, and projects. All assignments are pretty easy to do well on, although she can be a tough grader. She is very particular when it comes to certain things like grammar, vocab, and will take off 1-2 points here and there. With there being so many assignments, it was great how on top of due dates Professor Young was. She would send out email reminders with clear instructions and due dates. Overall, would definitely recommend taking a Spanish course with her.
I was initially nervous to take SPAN 2020 because the increased speaking element intimidated me, but Professor Young creates a supportive environment that encourages growth and learning from mistakes. Throughout the class, I became more comfortable experimenting with the language and pushing through discomfort to improve as a speaker. She guides students with thoughtful questions and gentle corrections that build critical thinking around word choice and grammar. Completing homework before class made sessions more engaging and productive. Professor Young’s patience, encouragement, and genuine investment in her students make learning enjoyable. I highly recommend her class to anyone looking to strengthen their Spanish in a positive, motivating environment.
Professor Young is SUPER nice and accommodating. I took her class fall semester of my 1st year and am so glad I did. Like most of everyone else, I took Spanish to fulfill the Arts and Sciences language requirement, and Professor Young is definitely the professor to take. She's very fair with her grading and actually cares for her students. I remember before every class she would ask students how they were doing and actually cared about our lives. In addition to Professor Young being extremely kind, she was incredibly good at explaining things. Her class felt very personable and was a great kickoff to my college experience.
