Going into this class, I wasn't sure what to expect. I had heard that language classes at UVA are extremely hard. After taking ASL 1010, I would agree with that. This is most definitely the hardest class that I took this semester and the one that I put the most work hours into. It was also my favorite class though. ASL is an amazing, fun, expressive language and Greg is a great teacher. At times it can be frustrating because the amount of effort you put in will not always be reflected by how well you perform, but Greg is always 100% available to help you out and is insanely understanding if you go to him struggling or even if you just forget to do an assignment as long as you show a passion for the subject. All in all this is a very worthwhile class and if you are even slightly interested in taking it, you should go for it. You definitely will not regret it.

Professor Propp is the bomb! He is such a nice guy he also is not deaf which is helpful for beginners when trying to ask questions. He is a native signer(most of his family is deaf) but when you go to his office hours he will tell you what he is signing. He tells funny stories through ASL and keeps the class interesting with group work. Not much work at all, it is not a written language so there is not much you can do. There is a workbook but it is not mandatory and quizzes are given by Gregg signing things at the front of the class while you write down what he says. It's a really good option for a language requirement.
This is an amazing course, I highly recommend it. Outside work isn't hard or time consuming, although I highly recommend going to the Signing Lunches. It is possible to get an A in the class if you pay attention and work hard. Overall, wonderful class.
Greg is one of the best professors at UVA, and just an all-around great guy. He makes the class fun, interesting, and relevant to everybody's lives, while teaching a HUGE amount of material in one semester. I loved this class, it is an awesome window into a culture that most people otherwise don't get a chance to observe.
Not too hard, as language classes go. Greg is a great teacher. People say he signs fast, but I haven't seen anybody sign slower than him, so I think it's just something you have to get used to. Everyone in my class has picked up the language pretty quickly thanks to Greg, and we feel comfortable signing to each other outside of class.
This class was phenomenal! Greg is very approachable, always answers questions, and pushes back deadlines when need be. Attend Signing Lunches if you take this class, you will get a better grade, period.
Great class, but pretty hard. If you are interested in learning asl and practice/(go to sign lunches) you can easily get an A-.
Great class. Greg is fun and a wonderful teacher. If you haven't been exposed to ASL, no worries, most people haven't before this class. It is difficult but completely worth it.
ASL was a great experience, but do not expect an easy A..or any A in general. It is a challenging class but it is also very rewarding! It is a full emersion class so all you do is sign, not speaking! If you can get into the class, take it. Tina is the best teacher for discussion!
This class was amazing. Anyone slightly interested in ASL after taking this class will love it. There is a little outside class work like Langauge Labs or SAV's but those occur periodically throughout the semester. Quizzes are slightly more difficult than expected but study and you'll do fine.
