Very interesting course. Readings are extensive and can take a long time to complete each week, but they're normally on fairly interesting topics. Midterm and final require preparation but if you're good about doing all the readings and using the study guide then they're manageable. William Boyce is a great TA - he's funny and his sections are always interesting.

This class has a lot of reading, and often times on repeated topics but for the tests you basically have to memorize what author wrote what, and what was his/her position on the topic. There is one midterm (worth 40pts and 40% of grade, so yes, every point on your test is a point of your final grade), one final( again, 40pts and 40%) and 3 papers that you hand in to your TA and altogether they comprise 20%.
Childress is very knowledgable in his field and I encourage you to get to know him. He wants to get to know his students. He asked me at an ourside event what my name was, where Im from and where I went to high school -- i'm telling ya, he's genuine! I would suggest sitting in the front because he is a little soft spoken even with the microphone and he also tends to ramble sometimes
Fantastic course! Professor Childress is one of the smartest and nicest men you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting, and the TA's were all fantastic. Readings every week, a midterm, a final, and three papers (graded somewhat easily). The topics are fascinating, I would highly recommend this class!
This was my favorite class that I took this semester! Keeping up on the readings each week is the key to doing well, because they help you understand the lectures and are what the discussions are about each week. Only 3 2-page paper whose topics you get to pick, a midterm, and a final. He gives a study guide for the midterm and the final, so if you do those, you will be in excellent shape! Childress himself is an awesome professor and posts lecture outlines for each lecture.
I loved this class, but lectures were completely unnecessary. Most everything you need to know comes from the readings, so you SHOULD DO THEM! They're also really interesting, I found, so I enjoyed them, even though there are a lot of them. There's a discussion section with this also, which was fine. I do not recommend Jeremy, though. He was a pretty bad TA.
Absolutely love this class! Childress is the man. I had William Boyce as a TA and I recommend him wholeheartedly. He makes discussions so much fun with interactive activities and a pleasant smile. He also is always laughing and trying to get the class engaged. Sometimes lectures with Childress can get boring, but he is so knowledgeable about the material and so enthusiastic and approachable that it's hard to find fault in the class. There's 3 short essays (1-2 pages, double-spaced), but you get to pick the due date. One of those papers has to be before the first midterm, though. Then there's a midterm and a final, but you get study guides both both of them. The tests are relatively easy too just do the study guide and memorize it and it's hard not to do well.
The course material was very interesting, but Childress is a not an animate lecturer--fell asleep a lot during lectures.. Your grade will be based off how much work you put into the class. You have to read because in discussion you talk directly about the authors and their pieces. Although Travis is a cool guy, I would steer clear as your TA. He grades pretty harshly and doesn't really give good reasoning as to why he gives you your grade. I know there are easier TAs
The class was really interesting at the beginning of the semester, but I felt like Professor Childress lost steam by the end of the semester.
There is a decent amount of reading each week, but whether you have to do it or not depends on how your section is run.
However, you HAVE to do the readings by the end of the semester because the exams are mostly based off of the readings. I found class lectures to be sort of pointless.
So this class was only fun and interesting because of the discussion sections and the content. I rarely went to Childress's lectures because they were boring and just rehashed the readings. Well, I went on Fridays sometimes because of the movies. The discussion section for this class was super fun and interesting if you take it with a friend. My TA, Matt Farley, was awesome and hilarious.
It is almost impossible to get an A in this class, since the cutoff is a 94. However, it is an easy B+ class and not too hard to get an A- in i
Childress is a genius, and while his lecturing style isn't very engaging the content is really cool. Never had lecture on Fridays, sometimes a movie. I loved this class--really makes you think about things. Also, discussion sections are very important and also really interesting; all the TAs were good my semester (and all were attractive men).
