One of the most interesting classes at UVA. The professor is absolutely wonderful and an amazing lecturer. She had class and work expectations clearly defined. The class itself covers concepts widespread in African religions through case-studies and the professor's fieldwork, then covers how non-African religions were indigenized, and how African regions impacted other world religons. It was extremely reading-heavy but the readings were interesting and complemented the lectures well. There were only four quizzes, two exams, and a final project. She's an easy grader but gives wonderful feedback. The professor is wonderful at answering questions in class if possible, and if needed, directing students to resources to further explore/explain concepts.

One of the most organized classes I have ever been in. Professor Hoehler-Fatton prints out weekly reading questions and lecture outlines for us that are used in class on our Thursday class discussions. Readings were a bit heavy at times and two novels were required but I was able to find them for free online. Grading felt pretty lenient, and our grades were composed from a few short reading quizzes, participation, an outside-of-class Africa event, and a blue-book midterm/final. I would recommend this class to anyone interested in the topic and think it is a very rewarding class to be in.

I took this class because it sounded interesting even though it had nothing to do with my major. It was honestly one of my favorite classes at UVa. Professor Hoehler-Fatton was a really engaging lecturer and the material itself was really interesting (my dad read our required reading too because it was such a cool subject.) Her test and quizzes were on the easier side as long as you read and studied. I would definitely recommend this class.

I loved this class, and Professor Hoehler-Fatton! I signed up for this class on a whim and it ended up being my favorite class, although I probably wouldn't take it if you aren't somewhat interested in the subject. Workload is doable, I took it as a first year and had no problem, the only work outside class was about 50 pages a week of reading. The grade came from 2 midterms and a "cumulative" final although most of that material was from the third unit, as well as participation, 5-point reading quizzes, and an Africa event. Overall I HIGHLY recommend this class!

TERRIBLE CLASS. The professor is so very boring. The TA (Kayla) who doesn't shave her legs btw, is also terrible. She grades consistently unfair. This was for my non-western perspective requirement and it turned out to be a horrible one.

Hoehler-Fatton is absolutely amazing. This class was a gap filler for me, and turned out be the best class of my first year. VERY engaging and articulate lecturer. The exams are aceable if you do the reading, and focus.
