The material in this course was super interesting, going over various mental and social disorders. Even though the chapters were long and repetitive, the book adequately covered everything we need to know and wasn't too bad to read.
Emery himself kinda sucks though. He's very full of himself and seems to value his opinion over the psychological world's opinions. His self-centered nature wouldn't be that bad, but the tests contain questions like "What is Emery's opinion on this" and "what did Emery think in this case study," which was pretty annoying. You can get an A if you put the work in, but this was nowhere near as fun or interesting as Social and Intro Psych classes.
Overall my rating for this class is really average. Emery is pretty knowledgeable and not boring but he's pretty full of himself. I thought the material in the class would be a lot more interesting but it really wasn't. Quick summary of abnormal psychology: every form of treatment kind of works, combinations work best, and there are a number of factors that cause mental illnesses. Furthermore, the book was incredibly redundant/dense/boring in my opinion (not to mention it's his textbook so he is profiting off of everyone which annoyed me). However, I thought the class overall wasn't very hard. There is an extra credit assignment that if you do 5/6 one page papers you get bumped up half a step (A- to an A). There are five tests including the final each being 20% where averages were around 84 for the most part i think, but if you take notes on textbook and go to class they really aren't hard and you should be able to get a 90 on each easy AND the final is basically a guaranteed 100% because he does his final from just pulling questions from the first 4 tests (he doesn't let you know about that until the end of the semester so he might decide to do it based on averages of tests or something so don't bank on it). Gonna get an A+ so happy w/how it turned out but would've liked to have been more excited to learn in this class.
One of the reasons why I took the class was because someone close to me is mentally ill, and I hoped to gain more insight on what to do and how to help. Overall, I learned a lot about how to help this person and seeing situations from a bigger perspective. I love the prof's use of real cases and efforts in making the class relatable such as using Harry Potter characters when talking about personality disorders. Also, you can chat with him about almost everything during office hours. Anyways, I ended up reading all the chapters and went to every lecture because I really enjoyed what I was learning. I ended up with a B+ even with the optional paper, but I was fine with it because I ended up learning a lot.
