Dr. Oishi is an awesome professor! Funny/interesting lectures. Took this class out of general interest and as a Batten pre-req, and I'm glad I did. Reading/taking notes from the textbook and attending lectures are important. Dr. Oishi uses iClicker just for participation points that can serve as extra-credit for the final exam. Tests are 50 MC and are not easy A's. Put hours into reading the textbook & studying for the tests and pulled a B+ in the course. I would say this class requires more work for some and less for others. However, would highly recommend this class with Oishi, but be prepared to put in some work!
I loved this class. Professor Oishi is fun and makes the class interesting in the way that he presents the material. He likes to engage the class on the material by using iClicker questions to demonstrate results of famous social psych studies. These are not graded, but participating helps to understand the study better. Oishi has a great sense of humor and while his tests can be tricky, as long as you keep up with the reading and take good notes in class, you'll be prepared. The grade is made up by three exams and one short paper. I'd say the key to doing well in the class is reading the textbook and attending every class because his lectures cover material not mentioned in the book and vice versa and he asks questions from both on his exams. That being said, I found his lectures enjoyable so I looked forward to going. Compared to other classes I've taken, this class had a significantly lighter workload and it was also interesting so I highly recommend taking it.
Really interesting class! Only one paper that is a minimal portion of grade, the rest of grade is based on the two tests which are multiple choice. Lectures coincide with the textbook reading. #tcf2016
Oishi is a good lecturer and keeps the class engaged but the tests are somewhat challenging. In addition, the papers are graded pretty harshly without much reason. His grading method makes it hard get a B+ or A-. You definitely have to go class to get notes for tests
Excellent class! This course material is very interesting and Oishi's expectations are well defined so you know what's expected of you. This course requires that you go to lecture and read the textbook but I found this class so enjoyable I looked forward to the lectures! There is 1 paper which I felt was graded a bit more harshly than I expected. I still managed to pull out with an A so I can't complain. Would definitely recommend this course to someone with a passing interest in psychology
Very interesting course taught by a professor that both knows his material and also how to present it. Oishi is a good lecturer; he thoroughly covers the material and presents already interesting material in interesting ways. Only three midterms and one very short paper in this class, with an extremely minimal workload. I put in a couple hours of reading the textbook every few weeks. Nothing more. Got an A. Material is not only interesting, but also relevant to everyday life. Useful for all majors/professions.
Although I don't believe in easy A classes, you can earn an A in this class with significantly less work than in others. Professor Oishi is funny, the material itself is interesting by nature, and the workload is extremely light. I took notes in lecture, read the textbook, and then studied a day or two before each exam and did well enough on them (a 90 is an A). There is one essay, but seems to be pretty leniently graded. All in all, this class is enjoyable, relatively not stressful, and you still learn a lot.
I loved Social Psych. It was my elective my first year and it was definitely my favorite class. Dr. Oishi was a fantastic teacher who knew how to make class interesting. This class was one of those ones where you didn't want to miss it because the lectures were actually worthwhile and Dr. Oishi would make hilarious comments and jokes in class. The workload was minimal. All you had to do was keep up with the reading. There were two tests, a short paper, and the final. The tests weren't easy to get an A on, but were easy to get a B. Overall, I would highly recommend it.
Take this course if you live in the world and interact with other people. This class has the most interesting textbook that I have ever read. I actually enjoyed doing the readings and going to class. Oishi had a good sense of humor and is a very good lecturer (sit towards the front thought, he speaks quietly). Also, there is some hate towards one of the TAs, Erin Westgate, on this page. To set the record straight, she does grade stringently on the paper, But she is very helpful. I emailed about my paper grade, and she replied with a long response about how to improve my writing. She also allowed me to have it re-graded by another TA.
