I love photography and did darkroom photography all throughout high school. but after this course, I don't know if I will take another photo class at UVA. This is not to say the class was not enjoyable, it just took way too much time and effort and resulted in me having drop other courses and not do as well in others. On top of that, it's super expensive. I already had a camera, but I still probably spent close to $400 on this class. Also, you are required to read two books and write papers on them throughout the semester. That all being said, I still really enjoyed the class and wish the time commitment didn't stress me out as much as it did. Alice is a really nice and helpful professor. She asks a bit more of you than some of the other professors, but she teaches you a lot. She can also be a bit of a tough grader.
TAKE THIS CLASS WITH ALICE!!! She's kind, hilarious, and overall just a wonderful human being. She genuinely cares about her students and willingly spends time getting to know everyone in her classes, which is something I have really appreciated about her. As the person below me has said, this class is definitely no small investment (both financially and time-wise). You'll spend a good amount of money on a film camera and other materials, and the process of shooting, developing, and printing in the darkroom is also pretty time-consuming. (Not unmanageable though.) But if you're willing to spend the time and money on this course, it can be extremely rewarding, especially if you're already interested in photo. Overall, I highly recommend both Alice and this course!
