Schoyer is extremely out there and loony, but she IS a good professor. I remember when I went on course forum, before taking her class, there were a lot of EXTREMELY negative reviews. It freaked me out a lot, but I took the class anyway because it was the last one open (and I'm an art major). In truth, she really isn't that bad. She is definitely a bit off, but that can make her really amusing and even more personable at times. SHE TALKS A LOT, and that can be boring, but its not the worst thing in the world. She is extremely willing to help you individually if you need it, and if you show interest, she will note it.
Its important to note that if you are NOT going for a Art minor or Major, that you should NOT take this class. It is not easy, and unless you are genuinely interested in making art and enjoy doing so, it is not fun. There is a lot of outside work for this class, so unless you actually like (LOVE) to draw, you will end up hating your life.
Schoyer is a great teacher. I learned a lot in her class; not only because I enjoy drawing and doing the work wasn't a burden for me, but because she teaches you about technique and helps you understand how to use the material. Just show up to class, do the work, and on the final tell her how you've improved your work from the beginning of the semester to the end. Overall, a lot of work outside the class is recommended but more than 70% of the class gets an A.
Schoyer is a very sweet and talented teacher as well as artist. This very basic art intro class was definitely helpful for a beginner, but is VERY challenging and time consuming! She basically wants to see her students transform and loves to see her students' work completely transformed after giving detailed instructions of improvement. This can be very frustrating for a student and beginning artist. She mostly gives Bs...even if you spend hours on her class
I decided to take drawing after abandoning art for a couple years. I quickly realized that you didn't have to be amazing to do well in the class, you just had to show improvement, which is not hard to do while doing the assignments. As long as you put effort into your work Professor Schoyer will give you a decent grade, however once she learns your personal style she can tell if you are slacking and call you out for it. There are many opportunities to improve your initial grade on any assignment. This class is easy if you dedicate the time you need. I am an extremely slow worker, but all I did to catch up was come in an hour early every once in a while. I will say that some of the assignments were not my favorite, but this class has very structured projects so that was to be expected.
