Horrible professor. Doesn't know how to teach art even if she might be good at it herself. Prefers students that are already experts in art and gives more help to them and ignores those that are taking art for the first time and aren't really good. The title of the course for this professor is misleading because it is not an introductory course but instead for people who are really advanced in art. Also, she is very moody. A lot of outside time is needed for the class. Even if you like art, she makes the class very unpleasant and turns people away from art especially at UVA if not altogether.
She does not evaluate students on an individual basis. Schoyer has very objective standards for a subjective field. She assumes, although it is an intro course, that students have a full grasp of basic concepts when they may not. Schoyer doesn't understand that learning is a trial and error process.
It's mind-boggling that in other ARTS 1610 classes the students only work in class and are not assigned much outside work when in Schoyer's 1610, ostensibly the same course, we spend hours and hours outside of class producing and reworking drawings to demand. Schoyer is a nice individual but her class is to be avoided at all costs. Something's gotta give.
For an Intro. class, there is an incredible amount of outside work. She has high expectations and assigns homework like we have all the time in the world-- and changes due dates on a whim. I like her as a person and she is actually very nice if you talk to her about your assignments, but it's a LOT of work. I have taken several art classes in the past and am, admittedly, more advanced than other students, but even I have trouble keeping up with the heavy workload. It feels like a 4 credit, 2000 level class...
At first, I really struggled in this class. Schoyer is undoubtedly crazy, and the changes of due dates are frustrating. She was pretty critical of my work (often times giving conflicting suggestions) and I often restarted projects all together. Once I realized, however, that she was pushing me because she thought I actually had some potential/talent after all, I began to enjoy the class and looked forward to going there. Expect an absurd amount of outside work, especially if you're a little slow. If you're having trouble, she will go easy on you and take time to work with you, but don't expect her class to be an easy A.
Hated this class. I have been an artist for a very long time, but Schoyer has single-handedly made me think about dropping art altogether. Too much work outside of class, extremely, EXTRAORDINARILY pointless activities during class (like viewing slides for hours on end, which, not surprisingly, is the reason WHY we needed to work on things so much outside of class) and she doesn't take into account how much time was spent on the pieces (no matter how much time you spent on it, if it wasn't appealing to her wacky and ridiculous art style, she didn't like it). I could complain for an eternity, but long story short, avoid this professor at all costs.
