Professor Devereux is an great teacher, and I really enjoyed his course. He meets with each and every student to discuss their paper, both after the midterm paper and after the first draft of the final paper. As a result, you really end up writing a much better paper than you otherwise would have. Take the class.

Devereux is one of my favourite professor at UVA. He's just a sweet man who knows his stuff. Definitely take him!
A course on Plato can't hope to cover everything, but Devereux sets his up very well. Moreover, he explains things clearly, and the reading and writing assignments are quite manageable. In sum, a very good class.
Not a hard class...Dan is a fairly easy grader, more so than most in the phil dpt.
Difficult class to summarize. Devereux is a highly knowledgable and approachable professor who makes his lectures clear and tries to provide a full understanding of the material covered. Additionally, he gives out useful sets of questions for each Platonic dialogue discussed. Downsides include the enourmous of amount of text that must be read and no midterm. Instead, grading depends on two large papers and the final. Therefore, only recommended to those with previous experience in the department.
Plato is mostly tough reading, although it's not always necessary to do all of it. He gives you as much help as you like on papers and is very, very helpful in office hours. A wonderfully kind man and very even-handed as a professor.
