Although the course topics and readings are incredibly interesting and the discussions are often fun, the graduate student teaching this class, Derek, managed to make the class far from enjoyable. The time spent in class is often plagued by his uncertainty of how to teach, and the essays are graded very harshly for a class taken mostly by first years. His essay comments and grades are often based on his opinions only, and he offers very little assistance in the writing process. It is nearly impossible to know where you stand during the semester, and whether you are doing well or not. Although the class time is not challenging, its easy to end up with a grade much lower than you were anticipating due to the grading and lack of transparency.
