I knew a bit of Persian before coming in, but even the students who knew nothing at all were able to catch up to speed. Not everyone's accent will be great, but everyone will be on the same level of reading and writing comprehension. A lot of people wanted to take Arabic, but chose to take this when they couldn't get off of the waitlist. By mid semester, we could say and write more than anyone in the Arabic classes, and were receiving better grades. If you are looking into Middle Eastern languages, and are choosing between this and Arabic (or just couldn't get into Arabic), take Persian!! No one regretted taking it, and the professor is wonderful. Soft spoken, totally understanding, and a great instructor.
