Professor Puri does a great job of presenting abstract material without being too ambiguous. I wouldn't recommend this class for anyone who doesn't spend a lot of time playing or composing music, but for those who are interested, this is a great class and isn't too challenging if you really sit down and think about how to do the homework assignments, which are not particularly large.

Puri is hilarious and brilliant. The class is very difficult, but Puri is extremely reasonable about grading and is always available to help in person or by email. Awesome class with interesting material. Take it!

Puri is probably my favorite professor at UVA - extremely intelligent, fair, and passionate about his subject. I was dreading Theory III after Theory II, but he really made it interesting and worthwhile.

Very difficult assignments tempered by a wonderfully kind professor, who is probably one of the smartest and humblest men I've met at this university. Highly recommended- he made my work in Theory I and II feel worthwhile. When you end up analyzing a 10 page, 20 minute sonata by Chopin at the end of the semester, you feel like you are a true music major. TAKE THIS CLASS! You will not regret it!

I didn't know people could be this brilliant. Puri is by far one of the best professors I have had at UVA. The semester is basically an excursion into the major aspects of analysis (texture, harmonic sequences, sonata form, Neapolitans, augmented sixths, modulation), presented in context of the Mozart piano sonatas. Puri is a very affirming grader on weekly homework, which is nice, since the stuff is not easy. There is a gigantic final project in which you can analyze a large work or do a 50-bar model composition; doing this made realize how much I had learned, yet how little I knew still. Still, I would recommend this course to anyone who has a real interest in music (if, of course, you survived Theory II).
