Attendance is taken; if you miss less than a certain amount of classes, you get free bonus points attached to your final course grade, which is composed of 3 midterm exams. Some of the material can be quite boring depending on your preferences, but I think this class is one of the few classes at UVA that would interest all types of students due to the course's diverse coverage of materials

Easiest class at UVA. Definitely take if you have the chance. Friday attendance is mandatory.
I personally didn't find the subject matter to be very enthralling but this is a good class for general requirements as you will get an A if you just do the readings and ask Shiflet to explain anything you're not grasping. He loves what he does, is very knowledgable, and is a generally cool guy (unless you come to his lecture and goof off, then he'll flip out). He takes attendance and gives you a TON of extra credit just for showing up.
Not as easy as you think. Three exams, meaning each exam is a huge portion of your grade. Some of his questions are retarded. Very cool guy, not bad for a materials science course.
Excellent class, tests aren't quite as easy as some reviewers make it out to be and he is dead serious about the no-cell phone policy.
NOT as easy as everyone says it is. GO TO CLASS. Don't be stupid and lose the points. Lectures can be boring. He is so accessible though! Talk to him during OH's--he really wants to get to know you!
Not the most fun class, but you still learn very interesting topics! Also, you get up to 30points for just being in class.
3 test, all multiple choice, great way to get rid of a science requirement- shifflet is funny and tries to keep a boring subject interesting- great teacher!
Very Easy Class! Professor Shiflet is very knowledgeable and it shows. Did I mention that this class was easy? You Great extra credit for coming to class
This class is pretty interesting and not difficult. If you listen to lectures, read the study guides and do the practice tests, you will get an A.
