This is probably a required course but if you have to take it, take it with Melcher, she is great. The textbook was not good but I think they've stopped using it. When I was in this class I used to go to the MIT open courseware site and look at diff eq lectures that have been posted, and those are really good.

Tai Melcher is an AMAZING professor. She's extremely patient, a great lecturer, very clear, concise, and helpful. The material is not easy but if you do the homework, go to lecture and look over the recommended questions on which the 2 midterms and the final will be based, you should do well.

Although a pretty interesting subject and a very important class (required for most math degrees), I really disliked taking this course. The textbook and lectures (which were lifted directly from the text) were mostly focused on examples and not derivations or the reasoning behind the method.
