Ilya is a really nice guy, but I would recommend against taking his math class. His lectures left a lot to be desired, and I often felt like I was going into the homework completely blind. Also, I didn't personally have this problem, but some people couldn't understand his accent.

Nice guy, but not a good professor. Really hard to understand him and read his hand writing. If you are not a math wiz, don't take it with him because you will barely learn anything in class.
If I had not taken BC Calculus in high school, I am sure I would be failing. He makes the topics harder than they are and his thick accent and bad handwriting make the class a lot more difficult than it needs to be. I went to his office hours a lot and while he was there to help and happy to help, he did not understand that you are there for the office hours because you do not understand the material. Getting him to explain topics that you do not understand was difficult. However, he grades fairly and is not a mean person.
I don't think this was necessarily a difficult class but he made it a lot harder than it needed to be. Spent a lot of time explaining what NOT to do in problems and then going back at the end of class and giving the actual explanation...felt confused during most of the class. Eventually I just ended up teaching myself most of the course. He's a nice guy just not a good teacher.
