Professor Woodman is one of the most brilliant professors I have ever had the privilege of learning from. If you've been coddled along your entire Latin career, he will come across as harsh. Yet, once you begin to translate Latin like you never thought you could before, his "good"s and "well done...very well done"s will mean that much more. His grammar is top-notch and the class keeps a good pace in terms of lines/day. Do not miss out on the chance to take a course from him.

Professor Woodman is an exceptional teacher, and I highly recommend those seriously thinking about majoring in Classics to take classes with him. His teaching style is different from what we are accustomed to in America (he interrupts saying, "no"), but he is succinct and is very helpful and amiable. He makes sure that you know what devices are being used and how best to literally translate. Also, by completing the homework, you will be prepared for class.

Yes this is a difficult course, but Woodman makes it worthwhile. The man is a genius and perfectly friendly, once you get used to his English-schoolmaster style of teaching (he interrupts when you make a mistake in translation). If you want to ratchet up your understanding of Latin grammar and prosody to a new level, take this class. It's the best 3000-level course for students serious about Classics. Homework is about 7-9 hours a week of out-of-class translation, but everything in class is entirely straightforward and no sweat if you've done the homework.

Hated this class. Woodman goes on bragging tangents. He picks favorites too. Would not recommend. At all.
