I love Professor Crawford!!! She is such a quirky, funny lady, however, it may be pointless to say this because I believe she is retiring after the Spring. It is best to take this is you have previous experience in Latin, if not, this course will be quite intense and fast paced. Material is learned pretty rapidly during the 50 min lectures however, the discussion with your TA's are immensely helpful because you essentially do the lecture all over again except at a slower pace and a smaller classroom setting so you can ask questions. I think even without Latin experience you have all the materials you need to succeed. I had Vergil as my TA and he's great. I think any TA you get will be just fine. Just make sure to keep up and ask tons of questions. Your grade is very much based on your effort is you can study and learn efficiently. There are about at least 40 new vocab learned every week, with quizzes once a week. Overall, this is a lighthearted class, but by no means a gimme grade. The content is achievable and not really confusing, just be ready to work hard. I ended up with an A-

So, fun facts first: 1, Prof Crawford is quite a blast to have in lecture and her TAs are wonderful! 2, there's no oral aspect to exams, homework, or anything. 3, you get to experience a culture that lived long ago by understanding its language. How cool is that? Now some not so fun aspects: This class meets every single day of the school week, so expect a TON of homework. The pacing is fast and you'll constantly be weeping at the amount of vocab you have to memorize and how many quizzes are coming up. HOWEVER, if you can manage it you'll get by and have fun while you're at it. This course isn't for the faint of heart who just want an easy A, but it's definitely worth the effort!
Overall I enjoyed this course. However, I think it moved way too fast for an introductory language course. Be prepared to have a short homework assignment each night and be ready for weekly quizzes (which get increasingly harder as the semester progresses). Nevertheless, this was a nice course and I would recommend it to all students interested in the subject.
Professor Crawford also brings cookies to class sometimes so that's a bonus!
Prof. Crawford is great. The class is a LOT of work, but manageable if you keep up with it every day. Evan Waters is a fantastic TA. He's very down-to-earth and teaches very clearly and with humor.
This course definitely moves quickly. Quizzes (and pop quizzes) are very frequent. Because the class is five days a week, there is homework every night that is due each day and graded somewhat for accuracy.
not hard if you stay up on the work
You will learn a lot but this class moves way too fast. Also much of the class has already taken Latin; first time students will be at a disadvantage.
hard class! material is very hard if you haven't taken latin before, but TA's are nice and professor is pretty fair
Crawford is a hoot. Class is your stereotypical intro language class, but is made better by the fact that there's no listening or oral aspects.
I would not recommend this to anyone who isn't a master at learning languages. Also very annoying that it's a beginners level class but it's FILLED with people who have taken up to AP Latin. They're obviously in there for an easy grade and they cause the class to go very fast because the teacher thinks everyone knows everything. If I could pick my language req over again, I'd pick French or Spanish. They are a lot easier. The amount of work that needs to be put in for a true beginner is a lot to get a B+ or above.
