I found this class to be very interesting. We explored different elements of creating a business plan, and then got to put those skills into action by creating a business plan of our own. The course was engaging, but not a huge time burden. Definitely a worthwhile course, even as a non-civil engineering major.
This class is a good introduction to all the steps that are in place for a construction project to be approved. It goes through the ideation process into more specific topics like schedule and cost creation. The structure of the class is daily lectures with an activity about once a week. About halfway into the course, you are introduced to a final project in which you introduce your own capital budget project for UVA to be pitched. Then, you apply all the concepts learned to this project. Professor Duran is a decent lecturer, and the grading for the course is generous. Even when there are points taken off for assignments, the TAs give a lot of feedback about what can be improved. There are also some guest speakers who come and talk about project planning. These guest lectures are pretty interesting and give a good look into what the profession is like. Overall, the course is a good introduction to project planning and is not a huge time commitment.
