Prof. Owensby is a great professor who pays close attention to students' writing and in-class discussion. He's super knowledgeable about history, and the small class size definitely added to the experience. This was a challenging class (I wrote 2 8-page papers and one 15-page paper for the class) and had plenty of reading. But I also found it one of the most rewarding classes I've taken thus far at UVA. Prof. Owensby is also flexible and generous with his time in office hours.

Owensby is super knowledgeable and a very engaging professor. There was typically a lot of reading for each class period to be prepared for the discussion. He is a tough grader for essays, but the class overall was very enjoyable and interesting!

Professor Owensby is AWESOME! However, this course is not for you if you are looking for an easy A. There is quite a bit of reading and several papers, but he does not grade too harshly and looks for individual improvement. The course focuses heavily on discussion and is very interesting. Professor Owensby knows what he is talking about and you should take this class if you wish to enlighten yourself on the history of Latin American with an ecological perspective and gain so many other skills as well!

AMAZING class and INCREIBLE professor!!!! This is one of the classes that I wished would be a year long. Throughout the semester Professor Owensby gave me the tools to become a better and stronger writer, listener and an overall participator. He's a fair grader with lots of helpful advice on how each student can write a better essays. Although the readings can be tough at times (PDF's of 40 pgs) they are very engaging and useful for the discussions and the essays. The class length was not a problem specially since the discussions were very captivating. Professor Owensby is very approachable and willing to help each and every student is all the ways he can!! Fantastic course!
