Halliday is awesome, super enthusiastic. The papers for this class can be difficult though because the reading gets pretty dry.

Took this class in fall 07. Halliday is freaking awesome. The class is great. Although, if you are looking for an easy A this is not for you. There are three papers and a final exam. No study guides. Do the readings (he asks about specific ones of the final) and take good notes.
Halliday is incredible, absolutely incredible. This was the first class I walked into at UVA and I was blown away. The subject matter is pretty dry for most, the readings are tough because a lot of them are in outdated English, but his lectures are so entertaining and he gets so excited that it's hard not to love this class. He cares a great deal for the subject he's teaching and it's clear he wants his students to care just as much, he's very approachable.
Professor Halliday is the best teacher I have ever had. Wonderfully entertaining and worthwhile. Very helpfull in office hours and take note of his penchant for taking off his blazer when the lecture gets real intense.
Professor Halliday is such a great teacher. He is enthusiastic about every class and he makes a very dry English history into something fun and exciting. A lot of reading but you only have to write three papers a semester.
Halliday is a really enthusiastic and engaging lecturer. Having said that, the reading material was miserable; it was mostly incoherent, old-english primary source documents.
There are four-page essays every other week, and several essays for the final. In other words, you should be ready to write if you take this class. Halliday is an excellent lecturer and truly knows his stuff.
